Terance “Terry” Olaf Skjersaa and Susan Renee Skjersaa Tragically Pass Away in Oregon Avalanche, Leaving Behind a Legacy in Skiing and Education
Bend, Oregon – The Central Oregon community is mourning the untimely loss of Terance “Terry” Olaf Skjersaa, 57, and his wife Susan Renee Skjersaa, 52, following a devastating avalanche earlier this week.
The couple, known for their deep roots in the region, were found deceased on Monday, February 17, 2025, after a backcountry skiing outing turned tragic.
Terry and Renee, seasoned skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, were found buried beneath snow and debris in Happy Valley, a popular winter recreation area near Broken Top Mountain. Their bodies were recovered by search-and-rescue teams on Tuesday morning.
The avalanche occurred on a challenging south-facing slope at an elevation of 6,700 feet. Though the exact trigger remains under investigation, avalanche experts suggest that unstable snow conditions likely contributed to the slide.
Their tragic deaths have left a profound impact on their community, where the Skjersaa family’s legacy is deeply ingrained. Terry’s grandparents founded the first ski shop in Bend in 1939, and Terry himself had worked extensively in the ski industry. Renee, a dedicated educator with Bend-La Pine Schools, had spent nearly two decades helping students find career paths.
Terry and Renee are remembered for their love for each other and the outdoors. A close friend, Heather Johnson, reflected on their bond, saying, "They were like true love, not even soul mates, but twin flames."
The loss of this beloved couple has shaken Bend, but their legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
